Man of a Thousand Voices

Man of a Thousand Voices

A wonderful wonder

It is a common experience of many cartoon watchers that they remember certain cartoon characters that they had watched in their childhood even after growing old. In fact, there are a long list of such characters are fondly remembered by the young and old alike. Apart from Disney cartoons, characters such as Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the cat, Coyote, Road runner etc were created by Warner Bros which are easily remembered by many. One may wonder if there is anything common to all these familiar cartoon characters. Yes, there is a common thread that binds all these characters together. The answer is that each of these and many more were all given voices by a single artist- Melvin Jerome Blanc. Mel Blanc (1908-1989) was referred to with distinction, as the ‘man of a thousand voices’ as he gave voices to a wide range of characters from 1927 to 1989. This is indeed a record for someone who spent six decades of his career working in the cartoon industry.

Though the chances of you been seen Mel Blanc’s face is faint, you’ve unmistakably heard his legendary voice many…many times. He voiced hundreds of classic cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales, Barney Rubble, Foghorn Leghorn, and lot more to name. Globally famed as the man of a thousand voices, Blanc claims roughly 400 voices, in an interview with David Letterman, filmed in the late 80’s. In the interview, when asked by Letterman, how he develops the characters’ voices, Blanc humbly narrates, “They show me a picture of the character, and then they show me a storyboard which shows what the character is going to do in the cartoon. From this I have to create the voice. Like, Bugs they said was a ‘tough little stinker.’ So I thought, ‘Which is the toughest voice in this country? The Brooklyn or the Bronx?[mimicking Bugs Bunny voice] So I, uh, put the two of them together, and that’s how I got the voice of Bugs, doc!”

Blanc started off as a radio artiste but eventually gained fame as a voice and comic actor. He was able to give the appropriate voice support by merely looking at the picture of the character and the storyboard.  The storyboard was enough for Blanc to know what the character would do and he would create the voice for it!  This was and is an unusual talent. No wonder, in his time, he was the only voice-over artist to get an on-screen credit.
