A brief account of 4D Experience

The advent of 4D

4D or 4-D films are those that include physical effects into an existing 3D movie. It is also called seat effect simulation. In fact, media marketers have named such movies as 5D, 6D, 7D…..even 15D! We must not delude ourselves with the letter- D; it has nothing to do with Dimension, as in 2D or 3D. The bottom line for these movies are that physical effects like rain, wind, strobe lights,  vibration to name a few are used in sync with the existing movie. indias-top-animation-college-school-acedemy-institute-4D-theatreRecently, other effects like air jets, water sprays, and leg- back ticklers along with smoke, rain, lightning, air bubbles, smell etc. are being used to enhance the effect.
In a project survey made by few students of Animaster Academy, a leading animation training college in India, majority of the people had a misconception of 4D being an upgradation of 3D technology.

The 4D technology is not new. It dates back to 30years from today when Disneyland, Universal Studios offered 4D experiences. Sources say that of late, a South Korean company has built a chain of 4DX movie theaters targeting to enhance on-screen experience with motion chairs and ambient effects ranging from scents to bubbles. The multi-sensory thrills of amusement park rides multiplied novelty with 4D mesh proved fairly effective in attracting adventure-lovers at the toll of higher ticket prices.

However, a poorly synchronized 4D movie experience can vex the viewer. But Hollywood and other film industries may face challenges trying to adapt stories for the relatively newer medium of virtual reality. Few companies are attempting to roll out the next generation of virtual reality headsets realizing that much of the traditional movie format does not meet a virtual reality experience. Success of Virtual reality’s immersive magic depends upon the viewers’ feeling of being a part of the action and in control of the camera view as he/she look around the scene. If filmmakers and post production can get virtual reality right, it will not be hard to engage spectators with 4D effects of smell and touch to enhance virtual reality experiences.
